: poisoning due to excessive intake of selenium especially : poisoning of livestock by high levels of selenium consumed in plants grown in seleniferous soils that is characterized in the acute phase by diffuse necrosis and hemorrhage resulting from capillary damage and in chronic poisoning by degenerative and fibrotic changes especially of the liver and of the skin and its derivatives — see blind staggers
