: an infectious disease chiefly of southeastern Asia that is closely related to glanders, that is caused by a bacterium of the genus Burkholderia (B. pseudomallei synonym Peudomonas pseudomallei) which is found especially in water and moist soil and transmitted to mammals including humans chiefly by direct contact, ingestion, or inhalation, and that may occur as an acute pulmonary infection, as a localized infection (as of the skin), or as a sometimes fatal septicemia
