band keratopathy

noun

Medical Definition of band keratopathy

: the deposition of calcium salts in the superficial layers of the cornea immediately below the epithelium that appears as an opaque grayish white streak across the central cornea and occurs in hypercalcemia and various chronic inflammatory conditions of the eye

Note: The calcium deposition of band keratopathy occurs in the epithelial basement membrane, Bowman's membrane, and the anterior substantia propria.

In the early stages the patient with band keratopathy remains asymptomatic. However, once the calcification extends into the visual axis, the patient reports decreased visual acuity, visual halos, or a white spot on the eye.— Blair B. Lonsberry et al., Clinical Ocular Pharmacology, 2008
