: a large suborder of Diptera that usually includes the Nematocera and many of the Brachycera but is sometimes restricted to the more primitive families of Brachycera and that is distinguished by a pupal case opening by a T-shaped cleft behind the head or by a transverse slit between the seventh and eighth abdominal segments
