early Scots hawgh, hauch, going back to halch, halech (in Latin documents), going back to Old English healh, halch "corner, recess," of uncertain origin

Note: The Old English word is traditionally taken to be related to holh "cavity, hole" (see hollow entry 1), but if holh continues *hulh-a- and healh *halh-a- there is no certain relationship.
