: a common hereditary disease that appears usually in early childhood, involves functional disorder of the exocrine glands, and is marked especially by difficulty in breathing due to mucus accumulation in airways, by faulty digestion due to a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes, and by excessive loss of salt in the sweat

Note: Cystic fibrosis occurs especially in Caucasian populations and is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait requiring that both parents pass on a copy of the defective gene on a chromosome other than a sex chromosome.
