borrowed from Canadian French & Modern Greek; Canadian French barbotte, barboute, borrowed from Modern Greek mbarmboúti, borrowed from Turkish barbut, of obscure origin

Note: A Balkanism presumably introduced into Montreal by Greek or Sephardic Jewish immigrants in the 1920s or earlier. The hypothesis of a French argot origin is not supportable.
