: a very large order of Gastropoda (subclass Euthyneura) comprising most land snails and slugs and many freshwater snails that are distinguished by lacking gills which are usually replaced by a lung or respiratory sac formed by the modification of the mantle cavity and communicating with the exterior by a contractile orifice capable of being entirely closed in which blood vessels line the walls and by having no true operculum and a nervous system that is concentrated and not twisted — see basommatophora, stylommatophora
