Note: Monte Cassino was the site of St. Benedict of Nursia's first monastery and the birthplace of the Benedictine Order. In the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, Allied forces suffered heavy casualties but eventually prevailed over the Axis defenders; Allied bombers destroyed the monastery, which was later rebuilt.
